IMPROVING MUSICAL ARTS EDUCATION IN NIGERIA THROUGH 21ST CENTURY SKILLS
Abstract
Improvement on musical arts education in Nigeria necessitates definite
information and considerate expertise essential for success on the
advancement of music in the 21st century. The concern is by what means
scholars within the discipline are expected to build a novel music knowledge
culture atmosphere that is dependable with the thinking and dramatic
demands of the century. Bibliographic and interview methods adopted for the
study reveal that communication, partnership, acute philosophical reasoning,
and originality are prerequisite to this development. The study concludes that
st inclusive or all-encompassing concentration on 21 century demand in music
st is a necessity. Enterprise or integrated corporation for 21 century music
services is also connected to the enlargement of the scope of music practice in
st Nigeria. Fundamental substance or outline for the 21 century music service
area must be reconstructed to suits the need for proficiency in Nigeria. Music, if
seen as a proper means of existence as livelihood abilities will draw many
students to the discipline. The study recommends that the cultural aspect of
music should be approached with novelty expertise to produce groundbreaking
results. The fact about the relevance of the music media technology
can no longer be ignored.

IMPACT OF IN-SERVICE TRAINING ON LEVEL OF
COMPETENCE OF MUSIC PROFESSIONALS IN
ABEOKUTA METROPOLIS, OGUN STATE
Abstract
In-service training is a form of self-development which empowers
professionals to contribute to the music community and increase their
earning capacity. Despite the trainings and musical degrees acquired at
various educational levels, some music scholars still perform below
expectation. This study therefore assessed impact of in-service training on
level of competence of music professionals in Abeokuta metropolis, Ogun
State. The research study provided answers to two germane questions such
as relevant training programmes that can increase the music professionals'
competence and the effect of in-service training on the level of competence of
music professionals. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were
adopted respectively. In the qualitative research method, 30 music teachers
were interviewed. Results indicate that mentorship activities as well as
constant personal practice rank first. In the quantitative research method,
result shows that significant difference existed in the effect of in-service
training before and after the training (t=-12.058; p 0.05). The effect of inservice
training programme on music professionals was significant in the
area of acquisition of more knowledge for rudiments and theory of music. The
study therefore recommends mentorship activities and acquisition of more
musical knowledge for improved competence and professionalism.

THE RISE AND FALL OF ERI OZURUMBA DANCE GROUP
OF AGBA NDELE COMMUNITY IN RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Agba Ndele community in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State,
South-South Nigeria has existed for years as a peaceful community and lived
together as one family. Eri Ozurumba in the community means 'dance whose
fame reigns in all communities'. Its cultural dance is one of the best dance
groups in AgbaNdele community where it serves as a unifying factor to the
community. The crises which engulfed the community for three (3) years
(2016-2019) negatively affected the dance's popularity. Membership of the
group is open to all the members of the community both male and female. The
aim of this paper is to x-ray the rise and fall of Eri Ozurumba cultural dance
group of Agba Ndele community. The Eri dance originated from Choba, a
neighbouring community. Primary and secondary research methods were
employed, key members of the group were interviewed, books, journals,
conference papers on related issues were also consulted. At the post-crisis
stage when the community became peaceful again and members returned,
the dance group abstained from performing the community's exclusive
dance. To address this problem, community and the group leadership sought
for membership drive and enlisted members for the Eri dance performance
the community's exclusive dance. It is recommended that additional
members should undergo training to serve as instrumentalists.

IMPROVING MUSICAL ARTS EDUCATION THROUGH
THE USE OF MUSIC SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS
IN SCHOOLS.
Abstract
The paper examined improving musical arts education through the use of
digital technology among schools in Lagos state, Nigeria. It discussed the
concept of musical arts education, highlighted the various types of music
software, and their applications in the teaching of music curriculum contents
in Junior Secondary Schools in Nigeria. This study relied solely on written
documents, personal oral interviews with the music teachers, instructors, and
principals of the selected schools, and experiential knowledge in its
approach/methodology. This study used published and unpublished library
and archives materials as source of data. The outcome of the research
revealed that roles played by teachers have changed as the traditional
education methods, techniques, and applications have been replaced by
students-centred methods, techniques, and applications. Teachers no
longer act solely as source of information but guide students to access
information and manage the process.

ENHANCING IDEALS OF NATIONALISM IN NIGERIAN
ART AND POPULAR MUSIC THROUGH
COLLABORATIVE COMPOSITIONS.
Abstract
Vocal or instrumental music is usually an expression of people's cultures,
beliefs, and languages. Opinions by various scholars are that musical scales
realized from languages of various cultures of the world are mainly the true
depiction of the genealogy of any music type. A composer is usually restricted
if he is solely given to composing within the confines of his culture and tradition
without deliberately making inroads into other people's cultures and musical
practices. Such a composer is hamstrung and may not turn out enough
compositions that he may wish to, and would also lack national and
international appeal and taste in his compositions. Through literatures and
historical purviews, this paper focuses on the benefits and importance of
collaborative works among composers in order to diversify in their quest to
create music that would meet the needs of various societies. Lack of
collaboration among composers poses a lot of problem to wide acceptability of
most composers' works in alien traditions. The paper concludes by advising
among others, that music studies should collaborate with other disciplines in
order to increase the knowledge scope and horizon of its practitioners, in order
to create music with general appeal.

IN-SERVICE TRAINING INFLUENCE OF MONI-NKIM
MUSIC EDUCATION IN AKAMKPA
Abstract
Moni-nkim music education is a holistic cultural training institute that is often
accompanied with various performing arts. These art forms are carried out by
maidens who are customarily circumcised and trained during the act of “nkimebibre”
(passage to womanhood) and/or “nkim-agut” (purification after
childbirth). The male counterparts are not exceptions to these art forms
however they have their specific roles during the ensemble performances. The
discourse highlights the in-service seclusion training of moni-nkim music
education introduced to the maidens during the procedure at the “nju-nkim”
(fattening room). Data were gathered through oral communication,
observation, participatory, pictorial and archival methods. Results revealed
that sustenance of the in-service training of the people's culture has dwindled
considerably, thus recommended that the continuity of this instructive training
be sustained. The approach to the female circumcision and the aftermath of the
over pampered maiden leading to obesity which posed as threats to emotional
trauma as well as human's health, should be abolished.

ANALYTICAL STUDY OF KABIESI AND ENE DOKPE AS
RE-CREATIONS OF INDIGENOUS GOSPEL SONGS IN
NIGERIAN ART MUSIC STYLE
Abstract
Nigerian art music is the result of concerted efforts by early Nigerian
composers who sought to create music that had semblance with their cultural
heritage. Initial attempts were limited to hymn translations into vernacular,
however, Nigerian composers inter alia, resorted to arranging folksongs in an
attempt to create an identity. Although the trend has lingered till this day,
composers have not relented in devising other approaches to creating music
with cultural affinity. Notably, the arrangement of indigenous gospel songs in
art style has been a rising trend. While some Nigerian composers have
achieved varying levels of success in this regard, some still seem not to have
profoundly grasped the art, as their works are either too short in length or
structurally underdeveloped, thus, making it unbefitting for live or recorded
performances. This observation came as a result of pre-field investigations
that included score study of some existing published Nigerian art music
compositions and arrangements. Using Kabiesi and Ene Dokpe as
paradigms, the author relied on ethnographic, analytical and descriptive
methods in garnering and reporting data. The study unearths the creative
dimensions and compositional nuances utilized in re-creating the
aforementioned indigenous gospel songs in art music style. It was discovered
that for song arrangements to raptly sustain the interest of the audience
during renditions, composers have a huge role to play, by bringing their
creative ingenuities to bear in areas like melody, harmony and rhythm. It is
therefore recommended that composers expand their creative horizons by recreating
existing indigenous gospel songs into master pieces for artistic,
religious and entertainment purposes.

THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS'
ENROLMENT AT THE FEDERAL COLLEGE OF
EDUCATION, OKENE
Abstract
This research investigates the impact of social media on students' enrolment
in the department of music at the Federal College of Education, Okene.
Despite its rich history, the department has experienced a troubling decline in
student numbers over the past five academic sessions. This decline threatens
the department's sustainability. The paper underscores the importance of
addressing social media's role in students' enrolment to ensure relevance of
music education and an enduring vibrancy at the institution. Utilizing oral and
observational methods for data collection, the research addresses the
imperative role of social media in elevating the department's visibility and
attracting prospective students. Key findings highlight the concerted decline in
music students' enrolment as posing a significant threat to the sustainability
and existence of the department. In response to these findings, the study
recommends leveraging social media platforms as powerful tools for
advertising and promoting the department, it emphasizes the need for
comprehensive recording of all departmental performances to facilitate
effective outreach and awareness creation. This research contributes
valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on the challenges facing music
education in the region and provides actionable recommendations for
sustaining and enhancing the visibility of music departments in colleges of
education.

CREATION OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-TERM ENTERPRISES:
IMPLICATION ON MUSIC EDUCATION IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The burgeoning music sector in Nigeria is undergoing a transformative shift
from a purely recreational pursuit to a business endeavour, propelled by
increased awareness through social media and technology. This paper
explores the challenges faced by music graduates in establishing small and
medium size enterprises within the music industry. This carried was out with
the aim to equip music students with the necessary knowledge and skills to
become successful job creators. Specific questions guiding this investigation
include obstacles hindering the emergence of such enterprises among music
graduates, the influence of age on the establishment of music businesses, and
the impact of educational qualifications on creating private ventures in the
music sector. Utilizing a descriptive research design, the study employed a
self-developed questionnaire as its primary research instrument. Data
analysis employed descriptive techniques, arithmetic mean, and
percentages. Dissemination of the questionnaires occurred through online
platforms catering to music graduates from institutions such as Lagos State
University, University of Lagos, Muson Diploma, and the University of Ibadan.
Findings indicate that educational qualifications play a crucial role in
enhancing the establishment of small and medium size music enterprises by
music graduates. Additionally, significant differences in the likelihood of
creating a music business were identified across various age groups,
highlighting the need for targeted support. In conclusion, the study highlighted
the importance of addressing structural deficiencies in the businesses
operated by music graduates. Recommendations include heightened
sensitization among music educators to foster self-reliance, organization of
regular music entrepreneurial workshops and seminars.

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION THROUGH COMMUNITY
MUSICAL ARTS IN NIGERIA: THE BEAUTIFUL
NUBIA EXPERIENCE
Abstract
This paper focused on community musical arts as a means to rebuilding
moral education and values within the society especially among the Yoruba
people in Nigeria. Adopting qualitative research design, it explored
community music performance in the experiences of 'Beautiful Nubia', a
Nigerian contemporary popular musician. Through participant observation,
the paper finds performance as a way to the restoration of cultural and moral
st rebirth within the 21 century Nigerian society. It concludes that benefits of
community musical arts includes direct mentoring, enhanced influence and
collective evolution as important strategies for the development and moral
education of the younger generation in Nigeria who are more vulnerable to
the loss of the value.

IMPROVING MUSICAL ARTS EDUCATION THROUGH
INDIGENOUS YORUBA CULTURAL FOLKSONGS AS
MORAL INSTRUCTION
Abstract
The focus of this paper is on the study of Musical Arts Education through
Indigenous Cultural Songs as Moral Instruction. Selected Yoruba folksongs
repertoire were used as basis for moral instruction in the selected schools
classroom teaching. This study relied solely on oral tradition, written
documents, personal oral interviews, and experiential knowledge in its
approach/methodology. There may appear other variants of the same
folksongs owing to Yoruba dialectical disparity. The study is limited to
selected public and private primary schools. The study's outcome reveals
that the use of indigenous cultural songs in the schools enhances moral
instruction, effective teaching and learning in the classroom because the
learner understood the meaning, context, and functions of most indigenous
songs used in the school's settings. In selected schools as soon as the
teacher uses indigenous songs in the classroom, pupils' attitude, response,
and class participation in the lesson equally changed. In conclusion, learners
enjoy their lesson more and exhibit more interest in the lesson through active
participation in the class activities.

ANALYSIS OF CREATIVE COMPONENTS IN
SELECTED SONGS OF DON JAZZY
Abstract
Creativity is the essence of musical arts, it allows artistes to explore new
horizons, express unique identities, and shape cultural narratives. Nigerian
hip-hop, with its distinctive blend of indigenous rhythms, lyrics, and innovative
vocal techniques, exemplifies a creative force that has captivated audiences
worldwide. This paper analyses essential musical components that
demonstrate originality in Don Jazzy's music and in addition considers their
influence on musical arts. The analyses of musical concepts were presented
in staff notation. Drawing on stylistic theory, this article provides an analysis of
five songs produced by the artiste. The study identifies particular components
in regard to the usage of melody, rhythm, harmony, and structure of his music
production through interpretative lens. The findings also shed light on the
creative brilliance and artistic ingenuity exhibited in Don Jazzy's songs,
providing insights into factors that contributed to his success as a music
producer.

AND MUSIC COMPOSITION
Abstract
The place of social media in 21st century is so pivotal to the development and
growth of nations. It had created smooth and unrivaled communication
medium between two or more distanced individuals, companies and
governments. Its influences on human socio-cultural, economic, political and
educational activities have created a new normal in every sector thereby
bringing forth comforts and exposures to digitalization of many physical
activities like; teaching, trainings, meetings, documentation, and preservation
of ethics among others. Given the viral changes and developments in every
facet of human endeavors, it is truism that areas of specializations in music
benefit from these digital influences especially; music composers and their
compositions are also being influenced. This paper using qualitative method
explores the intersection of social Networking and music composition. Using
observation and library methods, this paper report how social networking
platforms enhanced musical compositions, productions, promotions and
monetization of creative works through the networking. Significant numbers
of composers are adopting digitalization as a new system for production,
promotion and monetization of their compositional works.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS AND MUSICAL ARTS
EDUCATION IN NIGERIAN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS
Abstract
The increasing rate of unemployment is a major concern in many African
countries, especially Nigeria. As a pragmatic response to this ugly situation,
st the Nigerian government in the 21 century introduced entrepreneurial
education in institutions of higher learning, with the general objective of
equipping students with pre-requisite skills to becoming job
creators—employers of labour (entrepreneurs), rather than being job
seekers—employees after graduating from school. Entrepreneurial courses
are generally taught to students across disciplines in institutions of learning,
including music; as music and entrepreneurship have become inseparable in
the educational sector. This paper evaluates the importance of
entrepreneurship education to undergraduate music studies in Nigerian
tertiary institutions. It reviewed the curriculum of entrepreneurship studies
within the context of musical arts education. The study revealed that the
concept of entrepreneurship taught in music is relevant; though lacking in
comprehensiveness and scope. It was also observed that entrepreneurship
courses designed outside the scope of the music curriculum will not improve
the study of musical arts education in Nigerian universities. The study
summarizes that to promote musical arts education in Nigeria, educators from
the academia and music industry need to expand the scope of the musical arts
curriculum and employ adequate manpower with the skills and experience in
cognitive, affective, and psychomotor musical entrepreneurial skills. The
study concludes that music educators and professionals should incorporate
comprehensive music entrepreneurship courses into music programmes to
improve musical arts education in Nigerian universities.

THE INFLUENCE OF FOREIGN POP MUSIC ON THE
YOUTHS OF OGBOMOSO, OYO STATE
Abstract
This study examined the influence of foreign music on the lifestyle of Nigerian
youths in Ogbomoso, Oyo State. The main objectives of the study are to
examine the moral influence of foreign music content on the lifestyle of
Ogbomosho youths. Data for this work was obtained via oral interviews and
bibliography. The research design of this study is the descriptive research
design. Findings revealed that most Nigerian youths listen to foreign music
more than indigenous music which in turn exerts greater influence on the life
pattern of Nigerian youths. Findings from this study revealed both positive
and negative influence of foreign pop music on the lifestyle of youths in
Ogbomoso, Oyo State are overt. This paper adds to literature on the influence
of foreign music among Nigerian youths and provides basis for further
research on the influence of foreign music on Nigerian youths.

APPLYING RHYTHM AS A CREATIVE
PEDAGOGICAL TOOL IN MUSICAL ARTS EDUCATION
IN LOWER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Abstract
Music teachers generally face different challenges when it comes to teaching
lower elementary school pupils the basic processes of understanding and
acquiring the knowledge of what music is; and possibly discover themselves
as emerging musicians. In order words, teaching music to this set of learners is
not always easy because, the lesson is often held once week. Additionally,
these pupils might be in very different levels in terms of their previous musical
knowledge and willingness to engage. For instance, some of the pupils may be
entirely new to the school system, and that even the oldest may still possess
short attention span. Therefore, the music teacher must develop different
strategic goal setting of engaging his/her pupils with fun-filled activities that will
make them to be active and work with all parts of their bodies and minds. This
article explores the significance of incorporating rhythm as a creative
pedagogical tool in musical arts education for lower elementary school
students. It delves into the benefits of utilizing rhythm as a means to enhance
students' musical understanding, creativity, and overall cognitive
development. The article also discusses various strategies and approaches
that educators can employ to effectively integrate rhythm into their teaching
practices, ultimately enriching the musical learning experience for young
learners. Adopting Emile Jaques-Dalcroze's (1865-1950) 'Eurhythmics'
concept, the paper demonstrates the process of applying rhythm as a creative
pedagogical tool in musical arts education of lower elementary schools. It also
recommends a greater and intensive way of simplifying teaching methods of
music to young learners, especially lower elementary school pupils in Nigeria,
with the aid of these rhythmic activities in song, or poetry rhythm in the teaching
of indigenous musical knowledge in Nigerian lower elementary schools.

MUSICAL ART EDUCATION: A STUDY OF

This paper explores the intersection of music art education and
entrepreneurship in Nigeria, highlighting the benefits of combining these two
fields in the music industry. It also underscores the importance of collaboration
and networking in music entrepreneurship, highlighting the value of
partnerships and alliances in building a successful music career. This study
relied solely on both published, unpublished library and archive materials,
personal oral interviews with the music teachers, instructors, and principals of
the selected schools, and experiential knowledge in its methodology. The
study's findings indicate that music education is a vital aspect of producing
well-rounded individual. It also corroborates that conventional music
education in Nigeria has frequently been limited to classroom instruction,
which restricts creativity and entrepreneurship. It is pertinent to note the
significant role of music art education and entrepreneurship in developing a
more complete approach to music education has grown in recent years. The
outcome of the study also demonstrates how music art education can improve
entrepreneurial abilities; creativity, critical thinking, self-expression, artistic
growth, and problem-solving. It outlines how entrepreneurship may create
opportunities for musicians to display their ability and attract a larger audience.
It demonstrates how music art education and entrepreneurship can benefit
diverse communities by allowing people from underrepresented groups to get
into the music industry. The study concludes that music art education and
entrepreneurship in Nigeria are complementary fields that can benefit
musicians at all levels, from students to established professionals.
